Word of warning here - for years and years we in the west were told that the Japanese used hemp rope, and that hemp was fundamental to japanese bondage. Not so. It turns out that what the Japanese really use is actually jute rope and not hemp at all!
The confusion is because “hemp” can mean what it says - rope made from the fibres of the hemp plant - but it can also mean almost any natural fibre rope or even some kinds of synthetic rope made to resemble natural hemp as much as possible.
Anyway, good hemp rope is wonderful. So is good jute rope, and flax rope is pretty good too. Most people would have trouble telling them apart.
With increasing publicity and availability of natural-fibre rope in the West, it’s become more common to see it used in western bondage. Maybe that’s a step on the road towards fusion.
