Shibari is the Japanese word for the act of tying or wrapping (anything, e.g. a gift)
It’s debatable how it came to be applied to modern Japanese Erotic Rope Art, but it has become the generally accepted name for it in the West, if not in Japan!
It has a secondary meaning, best explained by reference to the western “hogtie” or “hog-tie”. The Japanese equivalent is “gyaku-ebi shibari” where ‘gyaku-ebi’ describes the shape of the tie and “shibari” functions exactly as “tie” does in the western version.
