In the box-tie or takate-kote which is the classic component of Japanese bondage, it can be the lower forearms that are tied rather than the wrists. But other eastern methods use the wrists as much as western methods do.
Just about any successful rope bondage depends on securing the hands, and that means tying the wrists - or possibly the forearms just above the wrists. If the ropework is to be at all tight, or if the tie is expected to last a significant length of time, wrist ropes must be positioned with care, because it is easy to compress nerves or restrict blood flow excessively, Some practical knowledge of anatomy is very helpful!
